Hubert Wilkins was an Australian polar explorer who made significant contributions to the exploration of the Arctic and Antarctic during the early 20th century. He was a pioneer in the use of aircraft and submarines in polar exploration, and his work helped to advance our understanding of these vast and inhospitable regions.

Wilkins was born in South Australia in 1888. He developed an early interest in exploration, and in 1913 he joined the Australasian Antarctic Expedition led by Sir Douglas Mawson. Wilkins served as the expedition's photographer and cinematographer, and he played a key role in documenting the expedition's work. He also conducted valuable scientific research on the Antarctic ice sheet and the surrounding ocean.

After the Australasian Antarctic Expedition, Wilkins returned to Australia and continued to work as a photographer and cinematographer. He also became involved in aviation, and in 1928 he made the first airplane flight over the Arctic Ocean. Wilkins's Arctic flight was a major breakthrough in polar exploration, and it helped to pave the way for future expeditions to the North Pole.

In 1931, Wilkins led an expedition to the Antarctic in an attempt to reach the South Pole by submarine. The expedition was unsuccessful in reaching the South Pole, but it did make valuable scientific observations about the Antarctic ice sheet and the surrounding ocean. Wilkins's expedition also helped to raise awareness of the importance of polar exploration.

Wilkins continued to work as a polar explorer until his death in 1958. He made significant contributions to our understanding of the Arctic and Antarctic, and his work helped to inspire a new generation of polar explorers.
