Juan Francisco Manzano was born a slave in Cuba in 1797. He was the son of an African slave and a white Spanish plantation owner. Manzano's early life was marked by hardship and brutality. He was forced to work long hours in the fields and was often beaten by his master. Despite these hardships, Manzano developed a love of learning and poetry. He secretly taught himself to read and write, and he began to write poems about his experiences as a slave.

In 1821, Manzano's poems were published in a collection entitled Poesías líricas. The poems were a critical success, and they brought Manzano to the attention of the Cuban literary community. Manzano's poems were praised for their beauty and their powerful indictment of slavery. He became a leading voice for the abolition of slavery in Cuba.

In 1835, Manzano was granted his freedom by his master. He continued to write poetry and to speak out against slavery. He also became involved in the Cuban independence movement. In 1844, he was exiled from Cuba for his political activities. Manzano spent the rest of his life in exile, but he continued to write poetry and to advocate for the freedom of his people.
